Is it bad….?
In reading an article for a class on interracial relationships, I came across this brief phrase. It strikes me as terribly romantic, which probably just reveals how whole-heartedly feminist I am: consensual desiring relations. That is nice, isn’t it? Better yet: “having sex, and affirming their mutual attraction to one another functions as a way for the novel to forground the dynamics of mutual respect and care that characterize consensual desiring relations” (my emphasis) *swoon*
“O Heathcliffe, I am overcome by our mutual respect and care for each other!”
Okay, I guess that’d change things a bit, but really, wouldn’t they be for the better? Back to work, I suppose.
Oh, the article is ” ‘Do I look like someone you can come home to from where you may be going?’: Re-Mapping Interracial Anxiety in Octavia Butler’s Kindred” by Guy Mark Foster. Octavia Butler’s Kindred is quite good, if you want a historical novel mixed with soft scifi (or,as my prof says the academics abbreviate it, SF). Mutual respect and care to all of you.
